The Good Friday Earthquake of Anchorage Alaska

January 22, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

By Phineas Upham

It was 5:36 in the morning when the ground beneath Anchorage began to quake with a force not all that different from the 1994 Northridge earthquake, or the 2011 Tohoku quake. Californians like to call this type of quake “the big one,” and it’s no wonder why.

The quake in ’64 lasted for four minutes and thirty-eight seconds. If you’re in a quake, that’s like an eternity of listening to your home shake, and the beams of your home tense up as everything rattles around. It’s a forever of listening to your plates and cups spill out onto the floor, and loud bangs that you can’t identify.

The earthquake was so strong that it caused the soil to liquefy. Fissures in the ground caused structural damage all over the city, and landslides made some roads impassable. Many homes were not adequately built to withstand an earth quake, and they paid dearly for it. Several homes were rendered uninhabitable. Some areas near Kodiak raised by thirty feet permanently.

The quake itself killed 15 people, but a tsunami that occurred subsequently killed 106 people. Property damage was estimated to be in the $300 million range, which would be well into the $2 billion range by today’s standards.

The quake also hit areas outside of Alaska. The quake created a tsunami wave that reached Prince Rupert, off the coast of British Columbia. It travelled up the coast, damaging a total of 375 homes and totaling 55. Twelve people were killed by a tsunami in California, while four people were swept away off the Oregon coast. The tsunami even affected Hawaii.
