Keeping the Garage Door Safe During Changing Weather Patterns

November 11, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

The garage door is one of the most used objects in the home, and one of the heaviest. An improperly maintained garage door puts you and your family at risk, so managing the changing weather patterns is crucial to your safety. Here are some tips you can do yourself before the winter weather hits in full.

Oil your Springs

A light coat of oil is all you need on springs for your garage door. This also serves as an opportunity to give your system a visual check. If the springs are rusted, have a technician replace them. It’s a good idea to perform this check yearly, even though your system’s maintenance schedule may specify every three to four years.

Check the Reverse System

If you put an object on the floor that is not tall enough to trip the eyes, your garage door should reverse its path as soon as it comes in contact with the object. This is designed to keep children and pets safe, as their limbs are small and may not trip the sensor that keeps adults and cars safe.

Settings for the Motor

In areas that experience heavy winds and frost, you may need to adjust how your motor performs so that you don’t over work it during winter. Your motor runs harder when it gets colder, so adjusting your force settings is important. Downforce, for instance, controls how hard your door pushes down. Check this before the winter hits so that a malfunction doesn’t cause the door to shift harder.

Tighten Bolts

You can use pliers or your fingers to inspect bolts, but be careful that you do not engage the garage door during this process so you don’t crush yourself. Look for loose bolts and tighten them with a socket wrench or pliers.

Hire a technician for bigger jobs, but these DIY projects are fairly safe for amateurs who take the proper precautions.

Outdoors: Excitement abound for the bow hunter

Today is the peak of the rut, the magical moment that deer — and deer hunters — wait for all year. Whitetail does mate only one day now — and not again until next year. Their limited period of fertility is precisely set in motion by the diminishing hours of the November sun. After 11 months of celibacy, phantom-like bucks will suspend their caution to find them. They mustn't miss their brief …
