If you’re looking for a colorful destination full of interesting cultural events and delicious cuisine, plan your next trip to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

This amazing festival is for everyone and anyone who likes to have a good time. For those who aren’t familiar with Carnival, keep reading.

Carnival is a wild celebration that spans over the course of five days, 40 days before Easter. It begins on a Friday in February and finishes on Fat Tuesday at the start of Lent. Ash Wednesday starts the season of abstinence for Brazilians and many others all over the world. Everyone is expected to abstain from all bodily pleasures for the season of Lent. It’s the time to give up vices of all kinds: sex, gambling, alcohol, certain types of food, and all other types of addictions. In a way it’s as if Carnival allows people to let their crazy, dark side out before saying goodbye to that part of themselves for the next 40 days.

Carnival, pronounced Carnaval by Brazilians, happens all over the country, but Rio is the capital of the action. There’s a reason that Rio’s Carnival is the biggest and the baddest. Thousands of Brazilians and foreigners participate in the giant party. Over 500,000 foreigners visit at that time of year. Rio gets absolutely wild. This is not the trip for those who prefer a quiet and serene environment.

The entire city is taken over by the festival. The streets and squares, bars and clubs are jam packed with people taking part in the festivities. Everyone is dancing the Samba and smiling from ear to ear. At least once in your life, you have to check out the Carnival in Rio.
