New Orleans is not a big city, at least not in the traditional sense, but you’ll find more heart and local culture in “The Big Easy” than most other cities around the world. Once you’re there, try asking the locals for their favorite spots. This guide is meant to get you off the beaten path, but the locals will help you truly find your way.
Wildlife
Looking for a spot to watch the birds? Bayou Sauvage is a pretty amazing outdoor place for local flora and fauna. It’s about a twenty-minute drive towards Mississippi.
Something Adventurous
Follow the trains to the marigny and bywater divide. Jump the fence on the river side and you’ll find yourself on the grounds of a new park that hasn’t opened yet. It’s one of the best views in the crescent city, just be careful you don’t get ticketed in the process.
Nightlife
There are great bars like Snake and Jakes all over the city, but tourists aren’t usually prone to them. If you find yourself near the Marigny, take a trip to Always Lounge or Siberia. For wine connoisseurs, Fabourg Wines is an excellent spot to hang your hat for a bit.
A Freebie
Walk the sculpture garden in the New Orleans Museum of Art. The garden is free, the walk is challenging, and the restrooms are clean.
The Moonwalk
The Mississippi river, up until recently, has been a river for commerce. That began to change during the 1970s and 80s. One of the spots that changed was the Moonwalk, a boardwalk path named after former New Orleans mayor Maurice “Moon” Landrieu.
