The biggest vacation trend this summer is the group vacation with friends and family. As many still struggling with the lingering effects of the recession have discovered, discount hotel packages split between more than one family can provide some much needed relief on their wallets while still allowing them to enjoy the pleasures of summer travel.

According to the results of a survey from TripAdvisor (via CNN), almost one-third of travelers with children will be vacationing with another family this year to save money. Although discount airfare or a discount cruise vacation package has always been in style, this trend of extreme cost cutting is much more common than it was even one year ago.

Whether you’re taking a road trip, flying cross country, or going on a cruise, vacation prices are much more budget-friendly when sliced more than one way, leaving leftover funds for sightseeing and meals. And the benefits aren’t just financial, either. Many families enjoy the opportunities to connect with one another in a more relaxed environment.

However, there are a few ground rules by which group travelers should abide. Make sure the accommodations are adequate. Communicate clearly the fiscal and daily responsibilities between families. And never discipline a child who is not your own. Follow these tips, and you could enjoy frugality and fun with friends and loved ones this summer.
